Improving business skills in the early years and childcare sector

This research report was undertaken by the Office for Public Management (OPM) for 4Children and the Department for Education, with a focus on the following childcare provider groups: childminders, nursery and pre- schools, children’s centres and out of school and holiday clubs. The aim was to find out about the current state of providers’ business skills and where they would like development and support.

The  report aimed to find out about the current state of providers’ business skills and where they would like development and support. The sustainability of good quality early years and childcare provision is critical to both the development and education of young children and to the wider economy by enabling parents to work and train. Developing the business management skills of early years and childcare providers is essential to ensure that they have every opportunity to make their business a success.
