Young Parents Group

27 October 2010

Agencies work in partnership to set up and support a group for young parents at the local children’s centre.

Starting point and evidence of need

The children’s centre manager met with staff at a local supported housing scheme for young parents within the children’s centre outreach area. A need was identified for a specific group for the young parents to attend with their children to help them engage with others in their community and provide an opportunity for them to play with their children and for their children to play with others.

The young parents were not accessing other groups within the community as they often felt judged by the older parents.

Work undertaken

Various sessions were planned for the families so that they could engage with each other and other young parents. A range of partner agencies supported the group, including staff from the Youth Enquiry Service, Sexual Health, Library Service, Speech & Language Team and Job Centre Plus. Local professionals were informed about the group, including the teenage parent midwife and local health visitors, and families were supported and encouraged to attend the group.

Outcome

The centre is evaluating outcomes regularly and they adapt their approach and delivery accordingly, working closely with the partner agencies to meet the needs of the families.

Why was it successful?

The group is successful because many agencies are working together to support the young parents and the families feel comfortable in their surroundings.

Next steps

The group will continue to be evaluated and adapted to meet the needs of the families and centre outreach staff will support families to attend the group.
