In 2008, with his daughter Aimee, John visited Malawi along with Glasgow based charity Spirit Aid. During their time there they created a new food programme and opened a crèche, which to this day feeds 1000 children, a visit which will stay with John forever.
This award is not only for John’s humanitarian work but also for his continual belief that ‘today is a gift’ and for going above and beyond to demonstrate this. In 2009 the whole Gilmour family were sadly forced to realise how fragile life is when, John suffered a brain haemorrhage. Given another chance in life, John wanted to do the same for someone else and selflessley became an altruistic kidney donator.
The Gilmour family have also fostered approximately 30 children, sharing their home, and providing a safe environment for vulnerable children in need of stability.
Samantha, who nominated her dad John, describes him as ‘inspirational and a true celebration of the human spirit.’
