Responding to Ofsted’s report on the Early Years, Chief Executive of 4Children Imelda Redmond CBE said:
“Quality is hugely important in the early years, so we welcome the news that 85% of early years settings have been rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.
“It is also good news that levels of development among children entering reception class have improved.
“However the attainment gap between children in disadvantaged areas and their peers remains worryingly wide. We know that as children progress through primary school into secondary it is very difficult to close that gap. If we are serious about tackling social mobility we must as a sector work together to ensure that children leave the foundation years to start year 1 with very best of experiences and having achieved “a good level of development”.
